We are part of Church of God one of the largest Pentecostal Denominations in the world with Headquarters in Cleveland Tennessee. Here in the UK we are known as New Testament Church of God and are the largest Black Majority Denomination with over 115 congregations. Our UK Head Office is based in Northampton.

Our church in Worksop is a black majority Pentecostal congregation (the term Pentecostal is adopted because we believe in the reality of God’s Spirit helping us in life as recorded in Acts chapter 2 of the Bible, which took place on the ‘day of Pentecost. Pentecost is a Jewish festival that happens fifty days after Passover, ‘pente’ meaning five). The church has existed in Worksop since 1959 when it was begun by West Indian immigrants that came to Worksop to work in the mines. Many black people found their reception in the indigenous churches a little cold to say the least (this was the broad experience of immigrants the country over) and so they began to meet for worship in their homes. Having outgrown the front rooms here in Worksop, the church began to rent halls for services and even used to hold Sunday worship at the cattle market for a time! Our own building now is the children's home on Cheapside (behind social services). The building was taken on by the church in the 80’s virtually derelict, and was then rebuilt by tradesmen within the congregation.

The style of worship is typical in many ways of the classic expectation from black churches of vibrant worship, music and singing. The sermons also have a little passion in them (I hope!). We are also active in things like prison visitation and ministry, hospital visitation, and youth work. We have services for young people (so they don’t get bored by my passionate sermons) and involve them heavily in the music/arts side of the church (which includes instruments, singing, dance etc).
